Whether we think this is true\, it has certainly been cloaked in shame through cultural and political narratives. Families report being misunderstood\, passed from agency to agency\, and even blamed for their own victimisation. Helen’s website and blog ‘Holes in the Wall’ brings together knowledge\, resources and people from around the world. It has around 2000 views every month and it has been accessed by individuals in over 100 countries. \nIn this training session we will examine what we have learnt about CPV over the last 10 years in particular\, as it has emerged as an issue which is thought to affect as many as 1 in 10 families with adolescent children. What is meant by CPV? How does it come about? They believe that this has the potential to add to practice knowledge in social work and to improve future practice. Their longer-term aim is to examine the themes that have emerged with a view to writing this up for a peer reviewed journal. \nThey undertook the initial filming for this project on site at Kingston University and the London Borough of Croydon. They remain thankful to the men who shared their stories and others who helped us with this project. Despite concerns about its negative overtones\, the term has become widely used in child protection policy and practice\, and is now embedded in many of the institutional and legal contexts in which child welfare assessments and interventions are carried out. Yet there is surprisingly little evidence to substantiate the concept of the toxic trio. \nIn this seminar\, Dr Rick Hood presents results from a comprehensive study of children’s social care data in six English local authorities\, which shows the extent to which different assessed needs and risks were actually found in families receiving statutory services and which clusters were associated with intervention at higher operational/legal thresholds. The findings raise significant questions about the accuracy and usefulness of the toxic trio as a way of conceptualising risks to children.
