SUMMARY:BLM and the Voice of Social Work – Discussion Group – 23.07.20
DESCRIPTION:A number of our partner agencies have announced the practical actions they will be taking to address the role that they and the social work profession must play in addressing the injustice and racism that led to the death of George Floyd. \nIn addition\, the Teaching Partnership Team will be facilitating Discussion Groups – BLM and the Voice of Social Work. \nAn article or piece of research will be shared in advance of each session and the session will be an opportunity to discuss this as a group. The group will also be the forum for deciding what discussion areas will be the focus for subsequent sessions. \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download

SUMMARY:Social work for lazy radicals: relationship building\, critical thinking and courage in practice - 13.02.2020
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jane Fenton\, University of Dundee\, makes the case for a radical approach to social work that can be embraced by everyone. It’s an approach based on real empathy and an understanding of oppression\, of managerialism\, of the moral heart of social work\, of humanism and of the effects of neoliberal hegemony.  \nJane Fenton provides a model of radical practice for students and social workers who are committed to ‘doing the right thing’\, and who want to develop their own framework for practice. \nThis seminar will appeal to students who are activists\, but want to frame their individual-level practice in a meaningful way\, and to those who are non-activist and non-political but simply want to be good social workers. It will give a political and moral understanding of social work practice and lead to confident\, value-based and enjoyable social work. \nBook here: Tickets – Eventbrite

SUMMARY:The Hague Convention & Transnational Abandonment - 15.01.2020
DESCRIPTION:An abrupt separation of a ‘good’ caregiver and child during the child’s formative years can have lifelong implications for the child. The emotional fallout is accentuated when a narrative that is untrue and conveyed by the person that caused the separation in the first place accompanies it. What legal tools can assist and how does this translate into practice? \nThis session is an opportunity to explore the legal and practice issues arising from cross-jurisdictional family law disputes. Two lawyers and one social work practitioner explore the Hague Convention\, an international convention with 93 signatories\, before moving on to introduce a socio legal area of research examining Transnational Abandonment. \nThe workshop also explores what social workers need to know when encountering families where there is either a risk of abduction or there has already been an abduction. It will also cover how the voice of the child is heard and represented in proceedings \nFacilitated by Jacqueline Harry\, Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Kingston University and two family lawyers. \nBook here: Tickets – Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Beyond supervision: shared sense-making and critical judgement in social work – 6.11.2019
DESCRIPTION:Supervision is recognised as a cornerstone of critical and reflexive social work practice. However\, many social workers report infrequent and/or inadequate supervision and this is a concern which practitioners and academics alike are seeking to address. The question posed in this seminar is “what happens beyond supervision?” and\, in particular\, what part do informal interactions between peers play in professional practice? \nDr Duncan Helm is a senior lecturer in social work at the University of Stirling. With a practice background in child protection duty work and an academic interest in judgement and decision-making\, Duncan has taught extensively on professional judgement (or sense-making) in conditions of uncertainty. His ethnographic research has cast new light on the role that informal interaction between colleagues and team members can play in social work practice. In this seminar\, Duncan will present empirical data and a theoretical model of shared sense-making which can help students\, practitioners and academics to articulate and work effectively with the influence of peers on professional judgement in social work. \nBooking is essential.
