SUMMARY:Free Social Work Webinar: Beyond the Toxic Trio - 28.10.2020
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to a free social work webinar\, hosted online by the Department of Social Work and Social Care\, Kingston University and St Georges\, University of London.  \nThe term ‘toxic trio’ refers to the idea that children are at much higher risk of experiencing abuse and neglect when certain factors combine in the family environment\, namely domestic violence\, parental mental illness (and/or learning disability)\, and parental substance misuse. Despite concerns about its negative overtones\, the term has become widely used in child protection policy and practice\, and is now embedded in many of the institutional and legal contexts in which child welfare assessments and interventions are carried out. Yet there is surprisingly little evidence to substantiate the concept of the toxic trio. \nIn this seminar\, Dr Rick Hood presents results from a comprehensive study of children’s social care data in six English local authorities\, which shows the extent to which different assessed needs and risks were actually found in families receiving statutory services and which clusters were associated with intervention at higher operational/legal thresholds. The findings raise significant questions about the accuracy and usefulness of the toxic trio as a way of conceptualising risks to children. Some suggestions as to how the sector might use typologies of demand to inform Early Help and community-based prevention will be made to prompt debate and discussion. \nYou can register for this free event here.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Black Men in Social Work - 11.11.2020
DESCRIPTION:There is a lack of research on Black Men in Social Work and Kingston University wants to create a space where people’s stories can be heard and understood and to film those conversations. They believe that this has the potential to add to practice knowledge in social work and to improve future practice. Their longer-term aim is to examine the themes that have emerged with a view to writing this up for a peer reviewed journal. \nThey undertook the initial filming for this project on site at Kingston University and the London Borough of Croydon. They remain thankful to the men who shared their stories and others who helped us with this project. They are going to continue talking and filming but thought it was time to share some of their initial results. There are remarkable stories here of resilience and determination\, a commitment to social work values and of making history. They were often moved by the testimonies they heard\, and would like you to join them in a celebration of the work to date. \nPlease book your free place here.

SUMMARY:BLM & the Voice of Social Work: Discussion Groups - Multiple dates
DESCRIPTION:The Teaching Partnership Team have recently co-facilitated a number of ‘BLM & the Voice of Social Work’ discussion groups. After reviewing the feedback from the first 3 groups\, and putting a call out for more volunteers to lead on these\, we have identified dates for 3 future groups. \nAn article\, piece of research\, image or video will be shared and the session will be an opportunity to discuss this as a group. Constructive feedback and themes emerging from the discussion will be shared with senior management across the Partnership. \nWe recognise that as a team of white women we are limited in many ways in terms of our experiences and perspectives and\, as such\, we will be co-facilitating the sessions with black colleagues from the Teaching Partnership. \n17.11.20 10am-11:30am Click here to book \n08.12.20 2:30pm-4pm Click here to book (part of a weeklong social work celebration event) \n20.01.21 2pm-3:30pm Click here to book \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download

SUMMARY:Child to Parent Violence & Abuse Training with Helen Bonnick - 26.02.21
DESCRIPTION:Child to Parent Violence and Abuse (CPV) has been described as the most hidden form of family violence. Whether we think this is true\, it has certainly been cloaked in shame through cultural and political narratives. Families report being misunderstood\, passed from agency to agency\, and even blamed for their own victimisation. Helen’s website and blog ‘Holes in the Wall’ brings together knowledge\, resources and people from around the world. It has around 2000 views every month and it has been accessed by individuals in over 100 countries. \nIn this training session we will examine what we have learnt about CPV over the last 10 years in particular\, as it has emerged as an issue which is thought to affect as many as 1 in 10 families with adolescent children. What is meant by CPV? How does it come about? What do we need to think about when working in this field and how can we best support families to bring about healthy and safe relationships?  \nAt the end of the session you should have a better understanding of the impact of child to parent violence and abuse\, and will go away with some very practical tips and strategies to support the families you work with. \nThe virtual platform used will be Zoom; please make sure you are able to access this platform and have the latest version installed. \nClick here to book.
