SUMMARY:Social work for lazy radicals: relationship building\, critical thinking and courage in practice - 13.02.2020
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jane Fenton\, University of Dundee\, makes the case for a radical approach to social work that can be embraced by everyone. It’s an approach based on real empathy and an understanding of oppression\, of managerialism\, of the moral heart of social work\, of humanism and of the effects of neoliberal hegemony.  \nJane Fenton provides a model of radical practice for students and social workers who are committed to ‘doing the right thing’\, and who want to develop their own framework for practice. \nThis seminar will appeal to students who are activists\, but want to frame their individual-level practice in a meaningful way\, and to those who are non-activist and non-political but simply want to be good social workers. It will give a political and moral understanding of social work practice and lead to confident\, value-based and enjoyable social work. \nBook here: Tickets – Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Free Social Work Webinar: Beyond the Toxic Trio - 28.10.2020
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to a free social work webinar\, hosted online by the Department of Social Work and Social Care\, Kingston University and St Georges\, University of London.  \nThe term ‘toxic trio’ refers to the idea that children are at much higher risk of experiencing abuse and neglect when certain factors combine in the family environment\, namely domestic violence\, parental mental illness (and/or learning disability)\, and parental substance misuse. Despite concerns about its negative overtones\, the term has become widely used in child protection policy and practice\, and is now embedded in many of the institutional and legal contexts in which child welfare assessments and interventions are carried out. Yet there is surprisingly little evidence to substantiate the concept of the toxic trio. \nIn this seminar\, Dr Rick Hood presents results from a comprehensive study of children’s social care data in six English local authorities\, which shows the extent to which different assessed needs and risks were actually found in families receiving statutory services and which clusters were associated with intervention at higher operational/legal thresholds. The findings raise significant questions about the accuracy and usefulness of the toxic trio as a way of conceptualising risks to children. Some suggestions as to how the sector might use typologies of demand to inform Early Help and community-based prevention will be made to prompt debate and discussion. \nYou can register for this free event here.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Black Men in Social Work - 11.11.2020
DESCRIPTION:There is a lack of research on Black Men in Social Work and Kingston University wants to create a space where people’s stories can be heard and understood and to film those conversations. They believe that this has the potential to add to practice knowledge in social work and to improve future practice. Their longer-term aim is to examine the themes that have emerged with a view to writing this up for a peer reviewed journal. \nThey undertook the initial filming for this project on site at Kingston University and the London Borough of Croydon. They remain thankful to the men who shared their stories and others who helped us with this project. They are going to continue talking and filming but thought it was time to share some of their initial results. There are remarkable stories here of resilience and determination\, a commitment to social work values and of making history. They were often moved by the testimonies they heard\, and would like you to join them in a celebration of the work to date. \nPlease book your free place here.

DESCRIPTION:The Teaching Partnership Team have recently co-facilitated a number of ‘BLM & the Voice of Social Work’ discussion groups.
